Braces

Metal Braces

These are the most common type of braces available and are much smaller than they were years ago. They are made with medical grade stainless steel and move your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. If you want to accessorise, you have the option of adding coloured modules that hold the wire in place. The average treatment time with metal braces is twelve to eighteen months. We see you approximately every six to eight weeks to adjust your braces and check on your progress.

Ceramic Braces

These braces are made from a ceramic material making them less visible. These braces are usually chosen by adult or older teen-aged patients who have aesthetic concerns. There are some disadvantages of ceramic braces in that they are larger, more brittle and can be harder to clean around. The elastics that tie the wire into the bracket can stain easily as well.

There is an extra cost involved with having ceramic braces and the brackets are usually only placed on the upper teeth. As with metal braces the average treatment time with ceramic braces is twelve to eighteen months and we see you every six to eight weeks to adjust your braces and check your progress.

The best time to start orthodontic treatment depends on the type of misalignment. For most people, the ideal time is during the adolescent growth spurt. In some cases, it’s better to wait until growth has finished, while in others, starting earlier may lead to the best results. After a consultation, we can give you personalised advice based on what’s right for you.
